Moka Pot
Moka Pot
Welcome to the 60s-Inspired Moka Pot Painting! In this retro-style painting, we'll play with muted tones and quirky shapes, capturing the iconic moka pot in a graphic, vibrant way. The key to this style is creating a clean, consistent look with distinct blocks of color.
Feel free to adapt these instructions as needed during your painting session. Change up the colors, add extra details, anything you’d like! Have fun exploring different techniques and creating your moka pot masterpiece! 🎨
Set up
After following our set up guide here, these are the paint colours you’ll need: white, black, red, yellow, and blue.
Important Tips
Desaturating Colors: For a muted color palette, mix each color with a touch of its opposite on the color wheel. For example, mix a bit of green into red to get a subdued, earthy red. This technique will help give your painting that vintage, 60s-inspired feel!
Consistent Color Mixing: Graphic-style paintings look best with solid, consistent colors. Before painting each section, mix enough of each color to ensure a uniform look across the entire shape.
Step 1: Mapping
For a clean, graphic style, use a thin brush and watered-down paint to map out the moka pot before filling in the colors. We do this watered-down paint for a few reasons: we don’t want the texture of our mapping to come through, we want it to be really easy to paint over, and we want it to dry quickly.
It looks like there’s a lot of steps below, but please don’t be scared off! They’re all there to help simplify the process :)
Start by drawing a line across the bottom quarter of the canvas. This line will be the base of the moka pot.
Draw a horizontal line about a quarter of the way down from the top of the canvas. This line will guide the top of the moka pot’s lid.
Paint a vertical line down in the centre from the top of the moka pot, down past the bottom line.
Map out the centre rectangle of the moka pot about an inch tall. Note that when we paint the rest of the moka pot, this part with be horizontally thinner than the other sections.
For the bottom section of the Moka Pot, from the sides of the centre rectangle, draw angled lines out on either side to meet the bottom line. Then, add a slight curve between them to form the base.
For the top, draw similar angled lines with less outward slant, meeting with a straight line across to form the top of the moka pot.
Draw a small triangle for the lid and another for the spout to the left side.
For now, we’ll leave the moka pot as a basic outline. We’ll add the quirky, mismatched panels later.
Step 2: Background
Use a muted light yellow for the background to make the moka pot pop. Adding a touch of water to your paint will help it sink smoothly into the canvas texture and any small cracks.
Because we want this painting to look polished from all sides, paint all the way around the edges of your canvas! This small touch really brings a finished, gallery-ready feel.
Step 3: Painting the Moka Pot!
Now it’s time to give personality to each section with color! Start with the middle rectangle in a brighter color to make it the focal point.
Paint each panel in a different muted color. For a quirky, 60s look, use angled, uneven sections rather than perfect lines—this adds character and charm!
Make each color distinct and vibrant but muted. For the spout, use a lighter color, and for the top triangle, use a darker shade to give it dimension.
Tip: Unsure of a color placement? Make a small mark on the canvas first to see if you like how it feels there. If not, adjust as needed!
Step 4: Details
Using black paint, add bold, angular details:
Paint an angular handle on the left side of the pot.
Add a top section to the lid.
For the small hole at the front, dip the back of your brush in black paint to stamp a perfect circle. Then, with a different brush, add another dot on top with white paint.
Step 5: Sign your masterpiece
The final touch—sign your work! Every artist deserves to claim their fabulous creation, and that includes you!
