Set up
After following our set up guide here, these are the paint colours you’ll need: white, blue, yellow, green, and black.
Step 1: The Dark Sky
Start with mixing blue and black paint to get that perfect midnight blue hue. Begin painting from the top of the canvas, gradually working your way down.
For blending: Add sections of white paint just below the midnight blue and, using a clean, slightly damp brush, gently brush between the white and blue areas. This will soften the line and create a smooth gradient. Try using broad horizontal strokes for an even blend. This effect will help create the illusion of a misty, midnight sky.
Step 1B: Moon Haze
Clean your brush well, then pick up a generous amount of white paint. Place it in the area where you’d like your moon to be, blending it out to create a soft, hazy glow around the edges. This will be the base for our moon later.
Step 1C: Edges
Remember to paint the edges of your canvas for a complete, finished look. This also makes your painting look great from every angle!
STEP 2: The Grasses - Layers for Depth
We’ll paint the grasses in several layers, each getting a bit brighter. This layering creates depth and makes the scene feel lively.
Darkest Grass Layer: Mix green with blue to create a dark shade. Use small, quick flicks with your brush to create thin blades of grass, flicking outwards from the base of each blade. Aim for a natural look, allowing each flick to come from different angles. Paint the grasses in a subtle semi-circle to give a sense of perspective.
STEP 3: The Grasses - Layers for Depth
2. Second Grass Layer: With just green paint, repeat the flicks for another layer of grass.
STEP 4: The Grasses - Layers for Depth
3. Lightest Grass Layer: Mix green with white to create a brighter green, adding a fresh, illuminated layer of grass. Repeat the flick technique.
STEP 5: The Grasses - Layers for Depth
Next Layer: Use only green paint again.
STEP 6: The Grasses - Layers for Depth
Final Dark Layer: Return to the darker green paint to finish the grasses with a subtle, shadowed effect.
Step 7: Adding the Moon
With thick white paint, paint a textured circle over the moon base from Step 2.
To personalize your painting, you can adjust the phase of the moon—crescent, half, or full
Step 8: Small Fireflies
Dip the back end of a small brush into yellow paint and dot it around the canvas to create the glow of distant fireflies. These should be small and scattered throughout.
Step 8: Depth to the Fireflies
For added depth, dot a few fireflies in bright white paint to make them pop.
Step 9: Main Fireflies
Once the grass layers have dried completely, we’ll paint a few blades of grass with bright yellow paint to represent fireflies resting on them. Then, paint small circles of yellow around these areas for the glow effect.
Once those yellow circles are done, to paint the more distinct fireflies, we’ll simplify their shape into two sideways V’s, like this ><. Use yellow paint mixed with white for this step to help them stand out.
Step 9: Final Details
For some final details, feel free to add wisps of white and yellow throughout the fireflies to give the painting some movement.
Step 10: Sign your masterpiece
The final touch—sign your work! Every artist deserves to claim their fabulous creation, and that includes you!
